About Japan Traditional Crafts
伝統的工芸品とは
Distinct from the general term “traditional crafts,” this designation refers to crafts that meet all five conditions below and are designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry under the law. They inherit traditional materials and techniques while being refined to suit modern life.
- 1Crafts that bring richness and comfort to daily life.
- 2Not mass-produced by machine; the parts that greatly influence the product's character are made by hand by artisans.
- 3Made with traditional skills and techniques that have continued from more than 100 years ago to the present day.
- 4Made from materials traditionally used from more than 100 years ago to today (where some materials are depleted or extremely hard to obtain, similar materials are also permitted).
- 5Made on a certain scale within a defined region.
There are currently 244 nationally-designated traditional crafts (as of October 2025).
Organizer
一般財団法人 伝統的工芸品産業振興協会
The association was established in 1975 with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to promote Japan's traditional crafts industry. Japan has a wide variety of crafts such as ceramics, lacquerware, dyeing and weaving, and washi paper, of which 244 items are currently designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (as of October 2025). Through various programs it promotes the industry and operates “Japan Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square,” which connects production regions with users.

The “Traditional Mark,” a symbol of trust
This is the symbol mark for crafts designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Designed by the renowned designer the late Yusaku Kamekura, it combines the character “伝” (den, meaning tradition) with a red circle evoking the Japanese flag.
Products made with the skills, techniques and materials designated by the Minister and passing regional inspection carry a “tradition certification sticker” using the Traditional Mark design. Products bearing this sticker are delivered with pride and responsibility for their quality.
